Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family go about their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
