Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause
Passing on unwanted presents can be considered somewhat rude – unless it's done the right way.
A Charitable Auction
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 gifts given to her by international figures while abroad. This unusual assortment could include gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
These items, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They will be sold in a public auction by a Rome-based art dealer. The specific date is yet to be set, but the intention is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the revenue going to non-profit organizations.
Storage Room Collection
The presents are currently locked away in a storage room on the third floor of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been gathering dust indefinitely.
The detailed catalog is yet to be made public, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was reviewed by officials. The question centered on whether a legal value limit was being followed. Legally, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.
A Global Assortment of Gifts
Notable gifts feature:
- A scarf from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
- Paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Various other items including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Political Backdrop
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from within her party, with winning over foreign leaders and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.
This unique auction represents a novel approach to manage the protocol gifts that are collected during a time in office.
