Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

This news arrives shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
