Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Ruin the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.

The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.

"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that kept me up at night," Lillard admits.

A Triumphant Return for Fallon Favorites

Reports have confirmed that three different characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Weight of Iconic Legacy

For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a small cameo is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer vividly recalls the precise instant he received the offer from the original writer.

"I remember the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the 1996 movie premiered, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.

"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every October 31st."

The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fandom

Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the beloved franchise.

"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Speculation and Excitement Abound

While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they exist rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are in some way still living in a strange shared situation. The possibility of a self-referential narrative, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also exists.

Moviegoers will find out the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
