Italy's Watchdog Criticizes Ski Pass Cost Increases as Totally Unreasonable

A leading Italian consumer association are raising alarms over what they call entirely unreasonable cost hikes for lift tickets this winter season, warning that alpine sports could become an exclusive privilege for affluent individuals.

Significant Cost Rises Throughout the Country

From the majestic Alps and stunning Dolomite mountains in the northern territories to the slopes of Abruzzo, prices are set to rise by as much as 40% compared to prices from three years ago, according to recent analysis.

The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which grants access to all 12 resorts in the exclusive Dolomites, will now set visitors back €86 per day during the current winter. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a single-day lift ticket is expected to reach €60, after experiencing substantial visitor surges last season.

Seasonal Pass Costs and Supplementary Charges

Meanwhile, annual skiing tickets will vary between €755 per adult in the Abruzzo region to as much as €1,800 in the northern Aosta area.

The cost of renting winter sports gear has also increased, along with hotel accommodations and restaurant prices throughout mountain resorts.

Watchdog Leader Points to Unreasonable Hikes

Gabriele Melluso, heading the watchdog organization, emphasized that the price increases—attributed by resorts to higher energy costs, facility upkeep, and demand for better equipment—were completely unjustified and not acceptable.

"Both because Italian inflation rates are managed effectively and energy tariffs, which had increased expenses for ski resort operators in 2022, have returned to normal," he explained.

He added that prices have climbed to points where budget-conscious visitors are being compelled to skip their traditional settimana bianca, or ski holiday, altogether.

Tourism Decline and Wider Perspective

Melluso observed a sharp decline in alpine visitors during the current winter period, with 1 million fewer Italians hitting the slopes compared to the previous year due to rising costs.

Even with these hikes, Italy remains a more affordable destination for winter sports fans in western Europe compared to neighboring Switzerland, French destinations, and Austria.

International Event Background

The increasing worry over skiing costs comes as the nation gets ready to host the 2026 Winter Games between the first three weeks of February. Italy's foreign minister, the foreign affairs official, announced on Friday that Italy had submitted a proposal to the United Nations calling for a "global truce" during the global competition.

"With Milan Cortina we must similarly convey a peaceful communication and conversation... to halt conflicts during the Games," he declared.
