Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Selection in English Test Series Team
England have opted for a twelve-player selection just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the first Test to decide whether the venue conditions favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about their fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with the latter expected to miss out if the spinner enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a ground that has hosted five past matches.
During these matches, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have just a handful.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers remains the probable choice.
Spin Options Weighed
Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to provide some slow bowling while also strengthening the batting lineup.
However the coach has opted to stick with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” he remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't let my secrets out so they come out and excel out here.”
