Study Indicates UK Government Officials Met Fossil Fuel Lobbyists On 500 Occasions During First Year of Government

Per fresh findings, government ministers engaged with agents of the fossil fuel industry over 500 times during their opening year in government – equivalent to twice every business day.

Marked Uptick Compared to Former Government

The analysis found that oil industry representatives were in attendance at 48% additional ministerial meetings in the existing leadership's first year versus the year before.

Official Response

Officials justified the discussions, asserting that officials held meetings with a broad spectrum of agents from "the energy industry, labor organizations and civil society to drive forward our sustainable energy superpower mission".

Rising Worries About Corporate Lobbying

Yet, the discoveries have caused alarm among observers about the extent of the petroleum industry's sway over government at a moment when leaders are striving to reduce costs and move to a greener energy system.

Major Discoveries

The analysis, which is based on the official released data of ministerial meetings, additionally revealed:

  • Representatives at the Energy and Climate Department held meetings with fossil fuel lobbyists 274 times, with corporate delegates attending nearly 25% of meetings.

  • The energy minister held discussions with fossil fuel lobbyists 250 times – with a third of every engagement including corporate delegates.

  • In the equivalent duration department ministers held meetings with worker group agents 61 times.

  • Three leading fossil fuel companies held discussions with representatives 100 times combined.

  • Petroleum sector advocates were present at the majority of government meeting about the excess profits charge, a interim tax on the "exceptional earnings" of marine energy corporations.

Political Reactions

An ecological representative remarked: "Instead of listening to researchers, residents impacted by environmental disasters, or parents desperate to ensure a secure tomorrow for their children and grandchildren, this government is prioritising lobbyists and profits for large energy corporations."

Official Denial

Ministers maintained the findings were "inaccurate", saying many of the corporations mentioned also had sustainable power initiatives and that these topics were frequently the focus of the meetings.

"Our main focus is a fair, systematic and successful change in the North Sea in line with our environmental and legal commitments, and we are collaborating with the field to protect existing and upcoming populations of good jobs."

Broader Context

Various prominent fossil fuel corporations have been condemned for reducing their environmental funding in recent times amid a international resistance against environmental measures.

An activist coordinator from an environmental law organization remarked: "Ministers promised a government of service, but that shouldn't involve yielding to corporations earning revenue out of ecological disaster. It's essential to stop cosying up to environmental offenders and prioritize citizens."
