Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped within a psychic prison forged from the memories of the villain Henry. Their mission for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a discovery that may just hold the key to defeating him permanently.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

After locating Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a Henry as a boy find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the trauma wasn't just a defensive killing.

Like many elements in volume 2, the full story behind the events in the tunnel originates in the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

The play reveals the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to sell to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their parallel research. The man in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the case most likely held samples of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the container could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The prequel shows that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later as a different person. As a youth, he battles the whispers of a malevolent force, similar to how the character Will was influenced by the entity in season 2.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to fortify himself.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale ahead.
