The Reform UK leader Accuses Teachers of ‘Indoctrinating Children’ on Racial Topics
Nigel Farage has asserted that educators would initiate walkouts shortly after a success at the polls for his party, accusing them of “harming young minds” by instructing children that black pupils are victims and white children oppressors.
During an event for a Michigan-based religious institution, the politician expressed his perspective on British schools, claiming that the “radical left-wing” had “now in control of our education system”.
“I expect a walkout by educators soon after securing a victory,” he remarked during a Q&A session.
“They are corrupting young minds. They are telling them to feel guilt about their nation. They inform an eight-year-old black child that he is oppressed and little Oliver, who is white, who is eight that he is a perpetrator. They are dividing us, not uniting us. They promote this harmful mindset.”
Reacting to these assertions, the head of a major education union dismissed the idea that the education system was controlled by Marxists as “absurd”. Kebede noted that any strikes must relate to teachers’ terms and conditions, and questioned whether the party would target these right after taking office.
“Farage has built his public life on dog-whistle politics and currently, similar to other figures, he is targeting educators and their unions for a conflict,” the union leader said.
“This is highly reckless. I don’t – and nor does my union – push critical race theory as he claims … If he were to lead the government he would undermine state services, particularly schooling … and the outcome would be catastrophic for education and children.”
The party, which tops surveys by about 10 points, has provided limited specifics on its educational plans and seems not to have designated an education lead.
However, his comments suggested the group would reform the system and the curriculum. He said: “We have got a massive job with schooling – absolutely herculean. Moreover, we can’t do it in six months or a year; it will take us years, years to turn this around.”
He stated that gen Z was more open to critical thinking, but older youth were “completely lost”.
Honoring a conservative activist, he commented: “My goal for schooling is to foster independent thought – to instruct people that multiple perspectives exist and you make up your own mind rather than current practices where one is virtuous and one is evil. It’s a massive job in both Britain and America.”
The party has conflicted with the UK’s largest teaching union, after Kebede called the party “extremist and prejudiced” and described the leader as “a poundshop Donald Trump”.
The politician has charged Kebede of being “an avowed radical” … someone who is absolutely determined that our children should be poisoned through education, their thinking tainted regarding national issues” and maintained that the union is trying to indoctrinate teenagers against Reform.
Almost one million people are employed in education in the UK, about half of whom are teachers and the remainder being assistants and administrative personnel. The leading teachers’ organization has hundreds of thousands of members.
National strikes over teacher pay and conditions in 2023 led to significant interruptions in schools and millions of days of lost learning for students.
During the American gathering, the Reform leader also vowed to promote the digital courses of the institution in the UK. He said such groups were “part of the fightback”, adding that: “I mean this. I’ll assist attract vast numbers of youth to your online courses. I make that commitment now and I will follow through.”
The college, a religious educational establishment, provides complimentary classes. Its website states: “Comprehensive learning is necessary for personal happiness and to maintain the benefits of freedom. The college furnishes these beautiful courses for no charge to every interested learner.”
